The Debut of the White Halter Dress

And, so, I end my unintentional hiatus with possibly the most awkward face ever captured in a photograph:

60's halter dress: the maiden voyage

My god. Can you believe I post this stuff on the internet?

This is what I wore to run some errands in the heat yesterday. This outfit is so incredibly dressed down by my standards, and yet, I still managed to attract some stares. I suppose that's what vintage clothing does for you. Stops one from becoming invisible. C'est la vie.

I bought this dress a couple of months ago, but hadn't worn it until yesterday. It's beautiful - I think I'll wear it to death over the summer.

Wearing:
• 1960's white embroidered nylon netting halter dress, purchased on eBay.
• White flip flops ... their reign begins for another summer!!!

And if you're wondering why I haven't made a post styling those pieces that I bought a couple of months ago and asked for your suggestions on how to wear, it's because the sleeves of the yellow organza dress tore right off the first time I wore it. I was horrified, and now have to find some way to salvage the poor thing.

Lace Dress

This is what I wore to a picnic barbecue last Sunday. I didn't feel that well on Sunday, and so I took myself to the doctor, who diagnosed me with ... BRONCHITIS. Ain't life grand.

It's always the way, though, isn't it? You finally complete something momentous and time-consuming, and then ta da! You get sick. I'm not feeling too bad though. Armed with pharmaceuticals and a lot of water, I should be just fine.

In other news, I love this dress. I suppose it's technically an overdress. It came with a white slip, but I decided to mix it up a bit and wear it with a pink petticoat. I also have a navy silk velvet ribbon I like to wear with this dress, around my waist. It wasn't a cheap dress - and shock! horror! it's not a vintage dress - but I had been looking for something similar for a long time, and when I saw that it was 75% off, I caved.

And it is the perfect dress for a summer picnic.

Wearing:

• Lisa Brown lace overdress, bought in my hometown, of all places.
• Vintage neon pink petticoat, eBay.
• White thongs/flip flops/jandals, bought for as little money as possible. I know they're not stylish at all, but come on. I'm AUSTRALIAN. You can't fight city hall.

Dorothy Shoes

SILVER SHOES

I bought these silver lamé shoes a couple of weeks ago - They're from the 1930's & are by Daniel Green. My first thought was that they were the love child of the ruby red slippers in the 1939 technicolour Wizard of Oz, and Dorothy's silver shoes in Baum's book.

In other words, the perfect shoe.

They're in incredible condition for seventy or eighty-year-old shoes - completely wearable! They are, however, a bit big, so even though I've stuffed the toes with tissue paper, I don't think I'll walk much further in them than, oh, say, my own backyard.

GRAD SHOW GRAD SHOW GRAD SHOW

GRADSHOW

The opening for this year's graduate exhibition was held on Friday night, and it was more lovely and exciting than I expected! My brother and his kids came down on Friday afternoon as a surprise, my parents and friends were present, and I received some lovely awards and some little red dots.

Fan-bloody-tastic. I could not be happier right now.

Pink was there too, and I'm so sad I didn't get a picture of his spectacular outfit, which, if I recall, combined white jeans, white Doc Martens, a plum-coloured velvet jacket and bow tie.

But I DID, naturally, manage to get photographs of my own outfit on the night. I also took photographs of my mum in her gorgeous 80's Yohji Yamamoto jacket, but they came out blurry. Oops.

Anyhoo, this is what I wore:

GRADSHOW

• 1950's blue and white lace strapless dress with union label, eBay. Miraculously managed to not break at the seams even after many wines and pad thai noodles. One of my beloved lecturers called it a "meringue", and I think that's about right.
• Red cotton socks, from a dollar shop!
• Spectator dance shoes, bought from a 50's repro shop when I was seventeen.
• Red headband, opshopped.
• 80's Ray-ban Wayfarers, eBay.
• Red 80's clutch handbag (unseen) which was my grandmother's.
