Baby Headdresses

two layered headdresses

Today and yesterday the wind outside has been strong and quite cold ... time for staying indoors, watching films and making little headdresses!! if you've been reading this blog for a while, you'll know that I have a headdress obsession. I have been attempting to make one for AGES, but something has always gone a little bit wrong. Finally, I've cracked it!

These two are made from velvet & satin ribbons, rhinestones and feathers. I like them layered up, actually. I'd like to make more, in different tones, and layer them in ascending order, like pale blue, royal blue and violet. That might have to wait until after my assessment, however. After graduation.

In two days I go back to Canberra and it's head down, bum up until December. The thought kind of makes me want to cry. Because really, I just want to fly kites, make cakes, wear headdresses and feel this relaxed all day, every day, forever.

Using The Imagination

today i'd like to wear ...

Some days you just want to play make-believe. Make-believe that it isn't blowing a gale outside. That you have money to burn. That it is summer two months too soon. Playing with Polyvore is fantastic for these kinds of days.

Other days, your trusty old G4 Powerbook decides to lay down and die, and you can't access your photographs for fear of killing it completely. So you borrow a Macbook and stare wistfully at your battered silver laptop lifeless on the table across from you.

Polyvore is perfect for these kinds of days too.

I went opshopping the other day and found some great stuff. I also bought an ivory lace dress with a bell sleeves that I am going to wear with a navy silk velvet ribbon tied around the waist. I also made a "baby headdress" from rhinestones, velvet ribbon & red-dyed feathers. But these will have to wait until I can safely get into my poor old computer.

Until then, I have two make-believe outfits. The first one I concocted quite some time ago, when it was freezing outside and I was dreaming of Spring. The other I made this morning, to sate my newly-found love of black and white, with splashes of colour. I bought the black and white Pamela Mann tights a while ago, but haven't received them yet. I can't wait.

Work and Play

Because my job - life modeling - often has specifications like "dress colourfully", "wear long drapery" and "wear stripes", my work outfits are usually quite fun to wear. These are a couple I've worn in the last few days.

goin' to work!!

Wearing:

• Pink cheapie cardigan purchased years ago.
• Rainbow pastel stripe dress, eBay, remixed.
• Mint green stockings, welovecolors.com.
• 1940's spectators, opshopped.
• Peach crinoline, underneath, eBay.

work outfit (again)

Wearing:

• Vintage scarf, a present from Boy.
• Vintage lace dress, vintage fair.
• Maroon tights, op shop.
• Black 80's oxfords, eBay.

In comparison, this is what I wore to go and see 'UP'. If you haven't seen it yet, GO. It's adorable. I cried. And considering that I laughed my way through the numerous deaths in West Side Story, it was no mean feat.

goin' to the movies!!

being a total douche.

Wearing:

• Grey 'Cue' dress.
• Black buckle cinch belt, eBay.
• Royal blue stockings, welovecolors.com
• Black 80's granny boots.
• Boy's navy tuxedo jacket, opshopped.

And after all that work and play, this Pony needs a drink:

Interrupting This Fashion Transmission

Something for the Weekend, 2006.

For a mere moment of staggeringly gorgeous abstraction. Garth Weiser is a young New York-based painter who mixes figuration and abstraction to make huge, sleek paintings. I really really want to see these paintings in the flesh -- reproductions don't do justice to anything, ever.

Sequinned Cardigan

I've ticked a lot of things off The List in the last few months. Vintage biker jacket? Check. Boater hat? Yep! Black patent boots? Done. Military jacket? Why, yes! 1940's pyjamas? 1940's playsuit? Black cinch belt? Check, check, check. Iridescent sequinned cardigan? See below.

I'm lucky to have found such lovely versions of all the things I've wanted for a long time. And, well, I have very few 'wants' left. For now.

I'm sure I'll think of something.

What's on your clothing wishlist at the moment?

Okay, first of all, sorry for the photograph. The truth is, most of my overhead lights in my apartment have blown, and I'm too damn tiny/lazy to change the bulbs. Including my kitchen, where I normally take my outfit photographs. My solution - as my boyfriend duly noted - is just to move a lamp into the room. So I'm now cooking by the soft, atmospheric light of a single lamp, which is not exactly the ideal light for picture-taking. Or cooking, actually. Oh well.

So welcome to my crowded spare room, home of a random red chair Pink left here, and my little piano.

Sorry, really.

This is what I wore to go and see a production of West Side Story. I honestly don't think I'm a musical person. It was good, but so serious that I fell prey to the giggle loop for the whole three hours. I was laughing so hard at one point I had to bury my face in the boyfriend's jumper so I didn't make a noise. Did I mention it was while the main character was dying? I am the true face of evil.

orange + sequins.
See? Evil face of inappropriate laughter.

I wore:

• 1960's salmon synthetic crepe party dress.
• Cream herringbone wool tights.
• 1950's cream iridescent sequinned cardigan
• Black patent buckle boots, Modern Vintage, secondhand.

& I added a black beret later. I love this cardigan -- I've been looking for one just like it for ages!

Okay, off I go -- time for cup of coffee no. 2!

Denim Again!

In a move that I'm certain will have Pony up in arms, I've once again decided to don the ol' difficult denim. And seeing as how I've just recently moved myself on to Sydney and it is perpetually summer here all year long, I thought I'd get all customisey and make myself a dirty tattered denim 90s rockstar vest!

I sorta wanted to channel Terry from the old fighting game Fatal Fury. I'm sure you can see where I was coming from. Sorta wish I had a pair of fingerless leather gloves now...

Coupling my vest of course with the obligatory bandanna (around the neck, Fred from Scooby Doo style), and then matching that red with my oldest pair of high tops, my good old Jordan 1's. I was originally going to wear stonwash jeans as well (either grey or blue, i couldnt decide) but i went with just plain black skinnies, too much denim can get a little overbearing...

Topped it all off with a Crooks & Castles shirt and my dodgy old Citizen watch, I'm pretty happy with how this outfit turned out. I ended up wearing it to a mates place for a BBQ then later in the night i went and saw french 80s god Kavinsky, i dont think i could have matched his style no matter how hard i tried.

crappy sound and video, but you can see his awesomeness!
